There are artists whose music defies categorization, forcing deeper reflections about the many different moods it evoques rather than a sequence of adjectives that describe its rhythmic patterns and melodies, or relating them with established currents of electronic music.

Based in Coimbra, Portugal, sussurro is certainly one of these artists, whose debut EP ‘dias normais, dia sufocante’ on 1980 reveals a unique sonic universe, anchored in experimentation and defiant of musical categories.

The title reveals a record divided in two (Portuguese for ‘normal days / suffocating day’) evoking distinct soundscapes and moods, and revealing an artist for whom music is a tool to process his inner world.
From the chaotic blend of dissonant synth loops layered on top of broken beats that welcome us on the opener viajar é o paraíso dos estúpidos, to the scintillating sci-fi pads over the relentless rhythmic cadence of rumor dos trigais, the minimalism of percussive and melodic elements in águas trémulas, and finally the luminous ecstasy of EP closer veia de uma manhã fluvial, sussurro’s debut release begs to be listened to in a museum exhibit, as well as in a dark dance floor with eyes closed.
